Future iPhones could have curved displays: Report
The report also suggests that Apple might also introduce touchless gesture controls as well, but all this is two to five years in the future.
After giving the world a notched phone, Apple is reportedly working on newer display technologies to stay relevant to the ever-evolving competition. A new Bloomberg report suggests that Apple is developing curved displays. One of the people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg that unlike Samsung which produces phones with curved edges, Apple’s approach might be to curve the display at the top and bottom. The current gen iPhone X already has a curved display, which is curved internally at the bottom and is not visible to the human eye.
That’s not all, previous reports suggest that Apple is working to design and produce its own microLED displays to meet its own high demands and to restrict its dependency on rivals such as Samsung and LG.
Besides that, the new report also suggests that within three to five years Apple may also develop and deploy touchless gesture controls on its iPhones. Samsung already has Air Gestures controls for many years now like waving hands over the display to turn the pages of an e-book. Samsung is not the only one, Google’s ATAP research group is also developing a similar technology under the Project Soli program. However, Samsung uses the motion sensor on the front bezel to offer Air Gestures. Apple, on the other hand, will reportedly use a less rudimentary approach with the technology to detect gestures built directly into the display.
In the meantime, Apple is reportedly working on three new iPhones for this year, two of which (iPhone X and iPhone X Plus) might use an OLED display. Hence, Apple is supposedly increasing its display sourcing from both Samsung and LG this year. The third new phone is likely to be another iPhone X, but with an LCD display.
