Blackberry Leap with 4G LTE connectivity coming to India
Blackberry Leap announced in India, features 5-inch HD display, 4G LTE connectivity and Blackberry OS 10.3.
BlackBerry has announced a mid-range smartphone in India called the Blackberry Leap. The Canadian handset maker stated that the smartphone will be available in the country from June and pricing details will be revealed closer to the launch date.
The Blackberry Leap was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona earlier this year. It features a 5-inch HD display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. The smartphone runs BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 and has a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage expandable up to 128 GB via microSD card support. It has an 8 MP autofocus primary camera with LED flash and a 2 MP secondary camera. Connectivity options included in the Blackberry Leap are WiFi, Bluetooth, USB and GPS support. It has inbuilt accelerometer and proximity sensors. The smartphone comes with a non removable Li-ion 2800 mAh battery that according to company claims delivers up to 25 hours of talk time. The smartphone gives access to Blackberry World as well as Amazon App store, giving users access to Android apps.
The Blackberry Leap is the successor to the Blackberry Z3 handset launched last year and is meant for business professionals, entrepreneurs and startups in the country. The company has positioned Leap along with the company's BES 12 Cloud service targeted at small and medium enterprises. Over the past few years blackberry's market share has been eaten away by Google's Android and Apple's iOS handsets. In an effort to revive its fortunes Blackberry has started offering its software business and core strengths such as data security, although the company stresses that it remains committed to its handset business.
The handset is priced around $275 (Rs 17,600) in the US. The handset was rolled out in the UK last month, followed by US, France, and Germany. The handset will compete with mid-range handsets from rival Samsung, HTC, OnePlus as well as domestic handset makers. BlackBerry India MD Sunil Lalvani stated, "The device will be an entry phone for these professionals who can then further subscribe to BlackBerry's other services. It's not a low-cost device and is positioned in the mid-tier segment. We expect a good uptake of this device in the Indian market."
