airtel rolls out 3G services in Delhi and NCR, vows to cover its 13 cities by March

airtel has rolled-out its 3G wireless services in Delhi and NCR, boasting of a robust network powered by more than 1,800 3G sites. According to airtel, this is the single strongest 3G network in the region, and can provide a “seamless 3G experience” for about 76 lakh people. After which point, the congestion we’re all dreading will become evident.

Across the country, airtel currently has 4,500 3G sites in 7 cities, and as such, caters to around half a million 3G subscribers already – a quick milestone for a service that commenced just over a month ago. Apart from Delhi and NCR, there are five other cities where airtel owns 3G spectrum, and it apparently intends to launch services in all of them by the end of March 2011. So far, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore, Manipal, Udipi and Jaipur have operational airtel 3G services.

Atul Bindal, President-Mobile Services, had this to say about the quick customer response, and the company’s promised time to market:

“We are definitely witnessing the tipping point of non-voice and data explosion in this country and will be bringing the airtel 3G advantage pan-India soon as promised.”

airtel claims it has fine-tuned its 3G tariff plans to be transparent and personalised – and so prevent ‘bill shock.’ Postpaid probably know what they are talking about. The telecommunications giant is also eager to point out that their mobile internet services extend beyond the realm of 3G-capable phones, to laptops and tablets. This means 3G dongles are now available at airtel outlets.

airtel is also launching other 3G content services, with airtel 3G mobile TV (priced at Rs. 40 for 20 minutes a week) providing a range of live and on-demand television channels.
