Apple’s 2019 iPhone rumoured to come with triple-lens camera setup
According to reports citing supply chain sources, Apple will introduce a new iPhone with three lenses at the back.
A new iPhone with three lenses at the back could be introduced in 2019, according to Taiwan’s Economic Daily News. After Huawei introduced the P20 Pro with a triple-lens rear camera setup, Apple is likely to do the same next year, if the report is to be believed.
According to the report, the triple camera setup on the 2019 iPhone will be led by a 12-megapixel lens and will have a 6P lens design with 5X zoom. The report doesn’t specify whether that will be optical, digital or hybrid zoom. The report cites sources in Apple’s supply chain stating that a radical new camera design will be implemented by Apple in the second half of 2019.
While it’s not known exactly how the triple-lens setup will function, it is likely that Apple will diversify the camera feature by including a monochrome sensor, much like what Huawei did in the P20 Pro smartphone.
The recently announced Huawei P20 Pro comes with a 40-megapixel primary f/1.8 lens along with a 20-megapixel f/1.6 monochrome lens and another 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto lens with 3X optical zoom.
The iPhone 8 with a single lens can already do 5X digital zoom, while the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X can leverage 10X digital zoom and 2X optical zoom. Apple has used the dual-camera setup so far to enhance its low-light imagery and to introduce “Portrait” mode to the world.
