Samsung is reportedly considering incorporating the waterdrop hinge design, featured on the latest Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, into its upcoming foldable laptop, tentatively named the Flex Note. It is expected to be launched next year.
According to a report by SamMobile, it makes sense why Samsung would want to choose a waterdrop-style hinge for its foldable Flex Note laptop. The waterdrop hinge design offers several advantages, including a reduction in the device’s thickness, a decreased visibility of the foldable display crease, and the ability for the two halves of the foldable device to close seamlessly without leaving a noticeable gap.

There is some speculation regarding the hinge choice for Samsung’s Flex Note foldable laptop. Some sources suggest that the company might opt for the waterdrop hinge due to the aforementioned benefits. However, there are also opinions suggesting that Samsung might continue to use a U-shaped hinge for this particular category of devices.

Some people believe that using a waterdrop hinge in the Flex Note foldable laptop could make it heavier and that having a less visible crease is not as important for laptops as it is for foldable smartphones.
Samsung showcased a prototype of the Flex Note at two major events. The initial unveiling took place at CES 2022, followed by another presentation at MWC 2023. This foldable laptop boasts a 13-inch display that can expand to a 17-inch wide monitor when unfolded.
According to industry watchers, the Flex Note is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2024 at the earliest. “That’s the best-case scenario, meaning the Flex Note could be pushed back to a 2025 or later release,” the report said.
