Bank of Baroda has responded to reports of a suspected data breach. In an X post the bank stated that the leak happened because one of the employees’ emails was compromised. They further clarified that its core banking infrastructure remains unharmed. The public sector lender said the unauthorised access was detected and contained promptly. While doing so, the bank also ensured that operations remained secure and faced no downtime. Aside from that, they have also stated that the bank will be running a forensic investigation to determine the full scope of the incident. The bank refrained from saying anything on the claims made by the hacker of the 1TB of data leak.

The Bank of Baroda put up a post on its official X handle where it clarified that the breach began after an employee’s email account was compromised. The bank said this gave an unauthorised party access to certain information but added that the incident was contained soon after it was detected.

The lender also underlined that its core banking systems were not accessed during the breach. According to the bank, customer banking operations continue to remain secure despite the incident.

Bank of Baroda: Action on data leak
To understand exactly what happened, Bank of Baroda has started a detailed forensic investigation. The exercise is expected to determine how the email account was compromised, what information was accessed and whether any additional systems were affected.
The bank said it is coordinating with the relevant authorities while following regulatory requirements. It has not yet shared a timeline for the completion of the investigation.

Bank of Baroda data leak: What remains unclear
The statement followed claims made by a hacker who alleged that around 1TB of Bank of Baroda data had been leaked online. The hacker claimed that the files included customer records, banking details, internal documents, audit reports and compliance-related information. So far, the bank has not verified those claims and has not confirmed whether customer data forms part of the information that may have been accessed.
Until the forensic investigation is completed, several questions remain unanswered, including the exact scale of the breach and the nature of the data involved. For now, Bank of Baroda maintains that the incident was limited to a compromised employee email account and did not impact its core banking infrastructure.
