Samsung at CES 2016: Family Hub fridge, SUHD TVs, Notebook 9 & more

Here's a low down of all that the key announcements from Samsung electronics at CES 2016.

Last night, as India slept, Samsung unveiled a bunch of new products at the CES 2016 showfloor. Ranging from IoT enabled refrigerators to Windows laptops, smart TVs and a 4K Blu-ray player, Samsung had it all. While we wait to get our hands on all these products, here’s a list of everything Samsung revealed at the grand Consumer Electronic Show happening in Las Vegas.

Samsung Family Hub- A fridge apart from the rest
In what’s been touted as one of the most innovative launches coming from Samsung this year, the Family Hub refrigerator is a smart fridge with a 21.5 inch Full-HD display that shows you what’s inside without opening the door, the ability to take stock of your food items, the ability to order groceries from the the comfort of your home and the power to give remote access to your refrigerator at anytime, from anywhere. The Family Hub refrigerator not only makes life a breeze when it comes to managing your food situation but also helps save on energy, reducing those huge electrical bills. Complete with a shopping app created by MasterCard, the Family Hub’s most prominent features include the following-

  • A 21.5 screen that uses Tizen

  • 3 Camera’s that capture the inside

  • A companion Android or iOS smartphone app

  • A built-in speaker for playing music

  • The ability to connect to a Samsung Smart TV

  • MasterCard’s grocery ordering service

  • Display of shared calendars, reminders, notes, YouTube videos

Samsung Notebook 9 laptops: The next big thin-and-light machines?
Samsung is bringing sexy back with its new Notebook 9 series of laptops. The two variants of the Notebook 9 include the 13.3 inch variant weighing in at 0.84Kg and the 15 inch variant weighing in at 1.29 Kg. Both laptops run on Windows 10 and are powered by Intel's latest Skylake generation processors. As per The Verge, the laptops are so light that it is difficult to believe there’s a large battery under the hood, but Samsung claims that, “The 15-inch Notebook 9 provides battery life for up to 12 hours, and the Quick Charging feature enables users to fully charge in just 20 minutes. The 13.3-inch Notebook 9 offers up to 10 hours of battery life on one charge.” Here are the key specs and features of the Notebook 9 laptops-

  • Ultra-portability, with the world’s lightest 13.3 inch Notebook 9 weighing less than 1 kilogram

  • 1080p Full-HD display

  • 12 hour battery life for the 15 inch Notebook 9, 10 hour battery life for 13.3 inch variant.

  • Pattern Log-in, Secret Screen, andRecord Block features help users protect private files and information.

  • Samsung Link 2.0 and SideSync 4.0 let users access shareable content

  • Iron Silver and Modern Pink colour options

  • Upto Intel Core i7

  • 128GB/256GB storage options

  • Windows 10

  • 4GB/8GB LPDDR3 RAM

  • USB C support in 15 inch variant
     


13.3 inch Samsung Notebook 9

Samsung SUHD TVs: Smart TVs get smarter with IoT
In its second edition of SUHD televisions, Samsung has stuck to some old features such as the curved screen and the underlying Tizen platform, but with the addition of a host of new features, a lot has changed under the hood. With improvements in the quantum dot technology, Samsung has enhanced the SUHD capabilities of the televisions. These TVs will also support HDR for brighter and more vivid image production. The Smart Remote that accompanies the TVs will now have the ability to auto-detect any digital media box or console attached to the television, thereby doing away with a setup process. Samsung has also overhauled the Smart Hub, which has additional app support, along with support for PlayStation Now. All 2016 SUHD TVs feature IoT hub technology, developed by Samsung with SmartThings.The SUHD TV can connect with and control over 200 SmartThings compatible devices – whether it’s to see who is ringing the doorbell, lock the doors or turn off the lights – all from the TV. Here are some of the key highlights of Samsung’s new range of SUHD TVs-

  • New Smart Hub is designed to provide users with simple access to their favorite content

  • Samsung Smart TV will automatically recognize the type of set-top box, game console, OTT box or home theater system that is connected to the TV.

  • Console-less gaming with PlayStation Now

  • With a push of the EXTRA hot button on the Samsung Smart Control remote, information related to the content will appear on-screen instantly.

  • Tvs act as IoT controllers
     

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S: 2-in-1 tablet with Windows inside
Samsung Electronics also announced the Galaxy TabPro S, a 2-in-1 hybrid, with a 12 inch AMOLED display, powered by the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system. The tablet promises to delivers full PC functionality with both Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro for business. The Galaxy TabPro S is 6.3 millimeters thin and weighs 693 grams. It also comes with a full-sized keyboard cover, which comes included with the device. The keyboard also has a flexible hinge, which enables optimal, dual-angle viewing for users. Following are the specs for the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S-

  • 12 inch AMOLED display

  • Windows 10

  • LTE Cat 6

  • Offers up to 10.5 hours of battery life

  • Intel Core M processor

  • A fanless 2-in-1 tablet

  • Multi-port adapter (HDMI, USB Type A & C) and Bluetooth Pen are available for purchase separately
     

Apart from the above major announcements, Samsung also announced two new editions of the Gear S2 classic, one encased in 18K Rose Gold and another in Platinum. Samsung also unveiled its first Ultra HD Blu-ray Player, the UBD-K8500, which is HDR compatible and offers four times the resolution and 64 times detailed color expression of a conventional Blu-ray player. Some smaller announcements included a new Portable SSD T3 palm-sized external solid state drive (SSD) and 3 new Creative lab products- WELT – a healthcare belt that helps people manage their waist size by measuring their daily habits and behaviors, rink – a hand-motion controller for mobile VR devices, and TipTalk – a remarkable new user experience (UX) that enables users to hear sounds, transmitted through their own body.
