OpenAI may soon take ChatGPT beyond phones and computers. The company’s first consumer AI device is expected to be a portable, screenless smart speaker designed to work as a ChatGPT companion for the home. The device is still under development and is likely to be unveiled later this year. A launch is reportedly planned for 2027. Unlike regular smart speakers, OpenAI’s device is expected to focus heavily on AI conversations. It may answer questions, play media, respond to messages and control smart home devices. The speaker could also use several ChatGPT features to help users with everyday tasks, reports Bloomberg.
SurveyThe device is said to become more personalised over time. It could learn more about its owner and use this information to offer useful suggestions. It is also expected to use mechanical parts that can move on their own. This will likely make the device feel more alive during interactions. OpenAI reportedly wants it to feel like a companion and serve as a physical version of ChatGPT.

Voice interactions are expected to be a key part of the experience. The device may use a more advanced version of ChatGPT Voice Mode called GPT Live, which the company recently launched. This new voice mode can listen and speak at the same time.
The rumoured speaker is also expected to equip a camera and other sensors. These may help it understand its surroundings and context. The speaker is also expected to feature a rechargeable battery. Users could easily carry it between rooms. It could be used in the laundry room while doing chores and later moved to the bedroom or living room to play music. Users may also keep it plugged in at one location.
According to the report, OpenAI internally describes the product as a new type of computer built for AI. The company is said to be working on around five hardware products, but the smart speaker is expected to arrive first.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is also reportedly working on a device designed to replace smartphones. For now, the screenless ChatGPT speaker appears to be the company’s first big step into consumer hardware.
