OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praises the iPhone Air, calls it cool
iPhone Air debuts as Apple’s slimmest phone with a 5.6mm profile and A19 Pro chip.
Sam Altman calls it the “first iPhone upgrade I’ve wanted in a while.”
Debate sparks over replacing Siri with ChatGPT, though Apple works on “LLM Siri.”
Apple’s annual “Awe Dropping” event on September 9 introduced the latest gen iPhones- the iPhone 17 series. Out of all four models, the iPhone Air, the newest and slimmest member in the lineup, has grabbed the attention. While the handset has been getting mixed reactions from users, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman seems to be pretty impressed with the handset even before it hits the shelves. Altman took to X to express his excitement for the new iPhone. “First new iPhone upgrade I have really wanted in a while! Looks very cool,” he posted on Tuesday.
SurveyReplying to his post, Edwin Arbus, an OpenAI staff member, asked him in the comments if he meant the iPhone Air, to which Altman confirmed, “Yes.”
The discussion went further when Yuchen Jin, co-founder and chief technology officer of Hyperbolic Labs, commented that Apple should replace Siri with ChatGPT’s voice assistant. Altman replied, “That tbh sounds like a great idea, I am supportive.”
Notably, OpenAI is already an exclusive Apple partner that supplies the underlying AI tech powering some of the core Apple Intelligence features. It also works alongside Siri via the ChatGPT Extensions system. However, replacing SIRI entirely with a ChatGPT conversational voice assistant doesn’t seem to happen, at least not in the near future. Apple is reportedly working on “LLM Siri,” a more intelligent and more conversational version with a similar tech foundation as ChatGPT and Gemini.
