Artificial intelligence is changing the market in surprising ways. It is creating new specialised jobs and giving more opportunities to creative people. While we’ve seen actors griding on sets looking for a role in a movie, TV show, web series or more, a new type of acting career is quietly emerging that requires no stage or traditional script. Handshake is a career networking platform which is widely used by students and young professionals. The company has now launched an initiative called Handshake AI to recruit performers for high-stakes data training. The company is currently seeking actors and improvisers to participate in unscripted scenarios.

According to Business Insider, these roles require performers to react naturally to light prompts while being recorded. Unlike traditional entertainment, the goal of this work is to provide high-quality human interaction data to leading artificial intelligence labs. These systems use the recordings to better understand human emotion, conversational nuances, and subtext.

The job posts also reflect a trend in remote and flexible work arrangements. The jobs offer up to 74 dollars per hour and are a lucrative offer for artists who have to manage multiple commitments at a time. Though a bachelor’s degree is a requirement, there is no need for a technical or engineering background. Furthermore, Handshake places importance on creative instincts and emotional intelligence. Performers will have to work with other actors via video to produce a sense of groundedness and authenticity in a scene.

The company is yet to officially reveal the use case of the data collected. However, the rumours suggest that the recordings are being used to train the video generation AI models to mimic more realistic human movements and speech. There are also speculations that the data is required for the development of more empathetic-sounding voice assistants and customer service chatbots.

The trend also represents a larger movement in the tech industry. As AI technology has become more sophisticated, the requirement for human expertise has moved beyond coding. Tech companies are now employing storytellers, writers, and performers.
