The initiative named as 3rd Eye is aimed at keeping a track of the traffic offenders in the city. The unique and first of its kind system in the country will help policemen to send the violator's photo to the challan officers instantly.

The challan officers, in turn, will impose a fine on the basis of photographic evidence. The photo will be saved in the back-end servers for future records of the offender. The 3rd Eye is a joint venture of the Gurgaon police, Millennium City Welfare Association and a major mobile phone manufacturer.

In the first phase of the project, nearly 300 traffic cops have been given Nokia E5 phones. The cops equipped with the smartphone will deployed on National Highway 8 and in the east and west traffic zones of the city. The phone will also be used to capture photo of the number plate and other relevant things.

All the E5 phones are customised and connected with a software called Teslina. The software has been specially programmed to store the records with the help of the GPS technology. The photo clicked by the smartphone is sent to the back-end server via GPRS. The photo is then forwarded to the processing centre. The Gurgaon police plans to increase the number of mobile phones in near future.

The initiative of the Gurgaon police is certainly a welcome move as it will help track traffic offenders and perhaps the crippled traffic system in the city. The technology such as CCTVs, X-ray baggage scanners and others have certainly helped in averting untoward incidents. Hopefully, the Gurgaon police will make judicious use of the technology.
