Google has announced a new feature called Play Games Sidekick, an AI-powered assistant designed to help you while playing games. This in-game overlay, available for games downloaded from Google Play, offers verbal real-time guidance while you play, making it easier than ever to get tips, tricks, and support without leaving the game.

The Sidekick uses Gemini AI to provide advice directly in your game. It can understand what’s happening on your screen through Gemini Live’s screen sharing capabilities, so it knows what kind of help you might need.
Google DeepMind showcased how Google is building AI agents across various domains, including gaming, last December. Since then, Google DeepMind and Google Play have been working to make Sidekick more useful for gamers.
“We’ve been having a lot of fun testing out Gemini as a helpful coach, as we continue to improve response quality in an array of games. We will start letting users try out this Sidekick experience in select games over the coming months,” the tech giant said in a blogpost.
In addition to the Sidekick, Google is making it easier to find the right apps. The company has announced Guided Search that allows users to type in a goal, like “find a home” or “deck-building games”, and AI organises the most relevant apps into simple categories.
Google has also introduced Play Games Leagues. Leagues will give players a chance to compete for Play Points rewards, engage the Play community, and earn ultimate bragging rights. The first League begins on October 10 with the popular game Subway Surfers and will run until October 23.
