The chaos stems from crew shortages linked to new pilot rest rules and an over-packed winter schedule.

Flying IndiGo? How check if your flight is cancelled or on schedule

The past week has felt like one of those moments when travel in India suddenly shifts from routine to unpredictable. IndiGo began cancelling flights from Tuesday, and the ripple spread across airports in a way nobody expected. People rushed to counters, hoping for answers that were not always clear, many had important plans waiting on the other side, students missed exams they had been preparing for over years, families missed weddings and special events, some did not get to meet loved ones for the last time. One passenger could not even reach his own wedding because his flight never took off.

The airline said the core reason was the shortage of crew members. And that single gap created a long chain of cancellations, delays and a lot of stress. If you have an upcoming IndiGo flight, the safest step is to check your flight status before you leave home. Here is the simplest way to do it.

How to check if your IndiGo flight is cancelled or on schedule

If you are flying soon, keep checking your flight status until the time you leave home. Do not assume your flight is safe unless the tracker confirms it. If your flight gets cancelled, contact the airline immediately for rebooking or a refund. Checking your IndiGo flight status is straightforward and takes only a moment. Here’s how you can do so:

  1. Open your browser and search for the IndiGo flight status tracker.
  2. Enter your PNR number, select your travel date and tap the Search Flight button.
  3. Once the page loads, it will show you clearly if your flight is on time, delayed or cancelled.

IndiGo also has a page listing all cancelled flights for December 8 and 9. If your travel date matches, checking that list gives you a fast and direct answer.

Why so many IndiGo flights were cancelled

The main reason behind this chaos goes back to how IndiGo interpreted a new set of rules planned by the aviation authority. These rules were created to ensure that pilots get more rest and safer working conditions. Weekly rest hours will increase from 36 to 48 hours. Late-night landings per week will be fewer. Pilots working into the night will have stricter limits. Personal leave will not be counted as rest. These changes were supposed to be fully active from November 2025.

However, IndiGo ended up planning its winter flights without fully matching these rules with the number of available crew members. The airline increased domestic flights from the summer schedule even though the number of flight deck crew did not grow enough to support it. Eventually there were more flights than the crew could safely operate, and the system started cracking.

Temporary relaxations have been given to the airline so that it can restore its schedule. However, the pilot groups are still worried that this may dilute safety and affect their well-being. The bigger question is why the aviation system allowed things to reach this point before stepping in more strongly.
