Elon Musk’s xAI Grok chatbot is now open source, takes a dig at OpenAI’s ChatGPT
HIGHLIGHTS

Elon Musk announced Monday that his AI startup, xAI, will open source their model Grok this week.

People are viewing this as a dig towards OpenAI.

Elon Musk replied to his own tweet, mentioning “OpenAI is a lie”.

OpenAI has been in the news for a while now, and no not for the reasons that it should probably be there for. We’ve witnessed the whole Sam Altman saga with the board members which is still going on for some reason. However, OpenAI has now come under the radar of Elon Musk, who was previously a stakeholder at this company. Long story short, Elon Musk announced Monday that his AI startup, xAI, will open source their model Grok this week. Now this seems to have a connection with Musk’s disapproval of the way OpenAI seems to be working. Read along to know what the whole deal is.

As I mentioned, Musk has decided to open-source Grok. People are viewing this as a dig towards OpenAI. With Grok being open-sourced, people will have free access to play around with the code behind this product. Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to share this news. In reply to his own tweet, he also said, “OpenAI is a lie”. What he is trying to imply here is that OpenAI was supposed to be open-sourced, hence the “Open” in its name. He had also previously mentioned how it was created as a nonprofit open source but was now closed to gain profits.

Musk says that he had launched xAI as an alternative to OpenAI and Google in order to have a “maximum truth-seeking AI”, in his own words. He has also previously stated how he prefers the concept of open-source AI.

Now what do experts think about open-sourcing such technology? Well one thing that experts have flagged regarding open-source AI is that terrorists could use it for their interests and could also be used to create chemical weapons or super-intelligence beyond human control.

Keeping all the drama out of the picture, I personally feel that with AI being a relatively new technology, we are uncertain about what we are exactly dealing with. Every step needs to be taken with utmost care.
