Elon Musk confirmed that xAI, his AI startup, is currently developing a digital encyclopaedia called Grokipedia to compete with Wikipedia. He described the project as an important upgrade over the existing platform, stating that it is consistent with xAI’s mission of enhancing understanding through AI. This announcement comes shortly after Musk posted a series of posts criticising Wikipedia, including accusations of bias and promoting a left-leaning agenda.

Musk has a history of questioning Wikipedia’s credibility and funding model, joking in 2023 that he would pay $1 billion if the site changed its name to “Dickipedia.” His dissatisfaction has grown in recent months, particularly after an entry alleging that he performed a Nazi salute at a Trump inauguration event, which he publicly disputed.
While Grokipedia is still in its early stages, xAI is reportedly hiring for the project, signaling that Musk intends to move quickly on this initiative. With the new platform, he aims to create an AI-powered alternative to Wikipedia, promising an encyclopedia that is both more accurate and aligned with his vision of technological advancement and information integrity.
Musk has also asked for assistance in building Grokipedia. “Join @xAI and help build Grokipedia, an open-source knowledge repository that is far superior to Wikipedia! This will be available to the public with no restrictions,” Musk added.
The Grokipedia is said to leverage Musk AI’s chatbot, Grok, launched back in 2023, to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Grok is capable of detecting lies, providing context, and correcting the misinformation, potentially offering a better source of information than community-edited platforms. However, there is still a lot of uncertainty about how it will function and when it will launch.
