Graphic details: Nvidia may kill GT200b series, Xbox is happy with ATI
The Web is abuzz with news that Nvidia might be killing its GT200 series of graphics cards. It all started with SemiAccurate’s Charlie Demerjian – who has long been criticised as a ‘tech tabloid’ writer by all and sundry – stating that the company is set to kill its GeForce GTX285, GTX275, and GTX260 graphics cards, and possibly the GTX295 too; thus abandoning the entire high-range and mid-range graphics.

“The company is badly mismanaged and hated by the very partners it needs to throw it a life preserver,” Demerjian wrote.

Nvidia’s response? “”There is no truth to this. Charlie has become a sponsored site of his sole advertiser. It’s no coincidence his website looks like an AMD ad,” Nvidia spokesperson Ken Brown told HardOCP.

Now, anything Demerjian writes should be taken with a pinch of salt anyway, but with sites like Fudzilla and Anandtech weighing in with similar news from their sources, there’s definitely something up.

“Nvidia told me two things. One, that they have shared with some OEMs that they will no longer be making GT200b based products. That’s the GTX 260 all the way up to the GTX 285… The second was that despite the EOL notices, end users should be able to purchase GeForce GTX 260, 275 and 285 cards all the way up through February of next year,” the report on Anandtech said.

So is Nvidia in trouble? Only time will tell…

ATI gets some Xbox love
Meanwhile, Fudzilla had a much juicier bit of news, and they are usually right about their ATI sources.

“We’ve learned from industry sources that AMD/ATI has already won the GPU deal for the next generation Xbox console,” the site reports.

Fudzilla also notes that the next generation of the consoles will likely hit in 2012, two years later than the original plan of 2010.

Apart from supporting backward compatibility, continuing with the same developer and giving them more time should also hopefully eliminate the problem of failures and overheating that occurred due to the rushed GPU of the Xbox 360.
