In the months leading up to release, EA and Battlefield Studios have clarified several important details that reflect the delicate balance they’re trying to strike between fairness, flexibility and player expectations. The way players on consoles and PCs will be matched-or not-could shape how the game is received. And as per latest reports, there will be no console-only crossplay in the game, as was reported earlier.

A report from Dexerto says that when a player on console will enable crossplay, the game’s matchmaking mechanism will try to match them with other console players on priority. However, some PC players might still be in the mix and could be matched with the players. For PC players, there is no option to disable crossplay.

In case console players switch crossplay off, they will only be matched with players on the same platform as then. For instance, if you are on Xbox, you will only be matched with other Xbox players. This also means that these players won’t be able to join players from other platforms.

Cross-play has become a controversial but unavoidable feature of modern multiplayer shooters. Console players often complain about facing unfair competition from PC users with keyboard and mouse, while PC purists worry about aim assistance or controller performance on console being over-emphasised.

The beta periods for Battlefield 6 gave early taste of how cross-play might feel; concerns about matchmaking quality, latency, and cheating showed up in forums. Now, with these configuration options and priorities laid out, the challenge will be in execution – how well the game balances speed of matchmaking with fairness, how transparent settings are, and how well the player pool is managed.

For many players on console, the promise of being able to opt out of competing with PC gamers is a relief. For PC players who enjoy dominating on precision input, there will likely be friction. But what stands out is EA’s willingness to meet both sides halfway: making cross-play mandatory in some sense, but giving enough control so that the console community isn’t left feeling like they’re at a consistent disadvantage.
