Microsoft could bring AI Magic Eraser tool to OneDrive soon

Lots of tech companies are putting AI into their products, some do it well, some not so much. In smartphones, we’ve seen cool AI features like Google Photos’ Magic tools that can remove objects or improve audio. A new report has revealed that Microsoft is working to add an AI Magic Eraser tool to its OneDrive application.

In the latest Microsoft OneDrive v7.1 beta 1 on Android, Android Authority noticed some hints suggesting that Microsoft is developing a “Magic Erase” feature. This feature will likely use AI for generative erasing functionality.

The Magic Erase feature is expected to let you remove parts of your photo that you don’t want. Just like other versions of this feature, you will likely be able to use a brush to mark the areas you want to get rid of. Then, AI will fill in those removed spots for you.

Microsoft will likely give a heads-up that the erased area might not be perfect or exactly what you were hoping for. This kind of caution is pretty normal for AI features like this.

OneDrive already has a photo editor in its Android app. In the current version, you can do basic stuff like cropping, adjusting brightness and contrast, applying filters, and adding notes.

When testing out the beta version, the AI Magic Erase feature couldn’t be turned on. So, it seems like it might be locked behind a server switch for now.

We’ll have to wait and see if and when Microsoft decides to release this feature. Given that the stock Photos app on Windows already has AI-based erase features, there’s a good chance that this feature in development will eventually become available to users.
