During its DevDay 2025, OpenAI announced a major update for ChatGPT: the ability to use third-party apps directly inside chats. This new feature allows users to interact with popular apps without leaving the ChatGPT interface, making conversations more powerful and useful.

With the update, developers can now create apps that work inside ChatGPT using the new Apps SDK, which is available in preview. Apps in ChatGPT are designed to respond naturally to your messages and offer interactive elements like maps, playlists, slides, and more. ChatGPT can suggest these apps automatically when they might be helpful, or you can call them by name.
For example, you could type, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday,” and ChatGPT will surface the Spotify app in the chat to create the playlist using your instructions. Similarly, if you’re discussing a new home, ChatGPT could suggest the Zillow app to show listings on an interactive map without leaving the chat.
Currently, apps are available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the EU across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. OpenAI launched the first set of apps with pilot partners including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. These apps are available in English in regions where the services are available.
The Apps SDK is based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Developers can test their apps in Developer Mode in ChatGPT and later submit them for review and publication. OpenAI will also share details on app monetisation later this year.
“The magic of this new generation of apps in ChatGPT is how they blend familiar interactive elements–like maps, playlists and presentations–with new ways of interacting through conversation. You can start with an outline and ask Canva to transform it into a slide deck, or take a course with Coursera and ask ChatGPT to elaborate on something in the video as you watch,” OpenAI said in a blogpost.
As more developers create apps, ChatGPT will likely become an even richer place to create, learn, and get things done, all from a single conversation.
