Best Wi-Fi 6 routers under Rs 5000 in India

Me and my brother felt our home broadband speed wasn’t enough for our internet needs and so, we upgraded the internet connection. And in the process, we decided to also upgrade the router. We had a budget of Rs 5000 and we could get a Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router. This Wi-Fi version could handle multiple devices at a moment. Besides this, we learned we have to look at aspects like the combined speed rating (AX numbers like AX1500 or AX1800), the number of wired ports, the processor and memory inside the router (which affect how smoothly it handles many simultaneous connections), security protocols (WPA3 is the current standard), and mesh support (which lets you add satellite units to cover a larger home without the usual speed penalty of a repeater).

For this list, I pulled the top options from Amazon India and ranked them in descending order of price.

ASUS RT-AX53U (AX1800)

Price: Rs 4,999

Unlike most budget Wi-Fi 6 routers, the RT-AX53U supports Wi-Fi 6 on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. This is particularly useful for homes with smart home devices, cameras, printers, and older gadgets that continue to rely on 2.4GHz connectivity.

The router is rated for speeds of up to 1,201Mbps on the 5GHz band and 574Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. Asus pairs a MediaTek dual-core processor with 256MB RAM and 128MB flash storage, a stronger memory configuration than what is typically available at this price point.

You also get one Gigabit WAN port, three Gigabit LAN ports, and a USB 2.0 port for storage sharing or a compatible 4G dongle. None of the other routers in this comparison offer USB connectivity.

Other features include OFDMA, MU-MIMO, Beamforming, Target Wake Time, WPA3 security, and support for ASUS AiMesh. The router is armed with AsusWRT with support for VPN, parental controls, traffic monitoring, guest networks, and detailed network management tools.

D-Link M30 (AX3000)

Price: Rs 4,499

The D-Link M30 is the only AX3000 router in this comparison. While most routers in this segment fall into the AX1500 category, the M30 offers speeds of up to 2,402Mbps on the 5GHz band and 574Mbps on the 2.4GHz band. The higher 5GHz bandwidth comes from support for a 160MHz channel width instead of the 80MHz channels commonly used by AX1500 routers.

Client devices also need to support 160MHz operation to achieve the highest speeds. Even so, the additional wireless headroom can benefit households with faster broadband plans and multiple users streaming, downloading, or gaming at the same time.

Rather than using external antennas, D-Link has opted for five internal antennas. One of them is dedicated to the 5GHz band, which the company says helps improve coverage and performance. The internal design also keeps the router compact and avoids protruding antenna arms.

Connectivity includes one Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports. That full four-port LAN configuration is increasingly rare in this price segment and can be useful if you have multiple wired devices such as a desktop PC, smart TV, gaming console, or NAS.

Support for OFDMA, MU-MIMO, Beamforming, BSS Colouring, and WPA3 security comes standard. BSS Colouring can be particularly useful in apartment buildings where neighbouring Wi-Fi networks compete for the same wireless spectrum.

The M30 is part of D-Link’s Aquila Pro AI ecosystem and supports mesh networking through 802.11k and 802.11v roaming standards. You can manage features such as automatic channel optimisation and traffic prioritisation through the Aquila Pro AI app.

TP-Link Archer AX1500

Price: Rs 4,399

The TP-Link Archer AX1500 brings the standard AX1500 specification with a 1.5GHz triple-core processor. It has a dual-band AX1500 standard. The 5GHz band uses Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for up to 1201 Mbps, while the 2.4GHz band uses 802.11n for up to 300 Mbps.

A 1.5GHz triple-core processor handles routing duties. A triple-core chip at 1.5GHz has more headroom for this than the dual-core alternatives found in some devices at similar or higher prices. It is paired with 256MB of RAM (for maintaining connection tables across all connected devices).

As for ports, you get one Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports. For wireless connectivity, you get OFDMA, MU-MIMO, Beamforming, Target Wake Time, 1024-QAM, and WPA3 support. It has four external antennas that handle signal distribution.

It supports TP-Link’s OneMesh ecosystem, which allows you to add compatible TP-Link range extenders or mesh nodes under the same network name. This can be managed through the TP-Link Tether app.

If you have an even tighter budget, you can consider TP-Link Archer AX12 at Rs 3799 and D-Link R15 Eagle Pro AI model for Rs 2899.
