In Digit Test Labs: Realme GT 7 gaming and performance tested, can it run BGMI at 120 fps?
The ‘Flagship Killer’ tag has always been tossed around loosely in the smartphone world. And Realme is back again, this time with the GT 7 to make that title stick. The smartphone is set to launch in India on May 27, and it runs on the latest MediaTek Dimensity 9400e processor. Since it’s a performance review, let me tell you the Realme GT 7 promises 120 FPS gaming, a massive 7000mAh battery, and strong performance.
We got our hands on the Realme GT 7 before its official release to test what matters most to gamers and power users: performance, thermals, and battery life. And the results are… interesting.
Addictive gameplay, but here’s what you should know
The Realme GT 7 supports up to 120 FPS gameplay in BGMI, which is something we’d expect from a performance-centric midrange smartphone. I played BGMI on ‘Smooth’ graphics and the ‘Ultra Extreme’ (120 FPS) frame rate setting, and it was smooth as butter and responsive as a snake strike. If you play on high graphics settings, this phone can run BGMI on up to ‘Ultra HDR’ graphics with ‘Ultra’ (40 FPS) frame rate setting. Anywho, in our gaming test, after a few minutes of action, we felt a minor lag and frame drops.
Frames started fluctuating between 90 and 120 FPS, and while this didn’t ruin the gameplay so much, it does mean the phone couldn’t consistently hit the promised frame rate. In fact, the average FPS over a full Erangel match landed at 102 FPS, which is good, but not the “full 120” many gamers would hope for. This means that the Realme GT 7, even though it provides a very addictive gameplay, could have run BGMI even better if it had stuck to its 120 FPS claim.
But why did the FPS fluctuation happen?
See, putting all the power in the world in a smartphone is different, and optimising that power correctly on that smartphone is different. If you don’t get the latter part right, the former part is of no use. But it’s just a context, and a bit of tech knowledge.
After one 30-minute session of BGMI, we measured the phone’s surface temperature at 43.9°C. On normal days, anything between 35°C to 40°C is considered normal under load, and anything over 50°C would be concerning. So yes, the GT 7 does heat up under pressure, but not alarmingly so.
This heating did impact sustained performance, especially during our stress tests. Under a 15-minute load, the GT 7 held up fairly well. But the 30-minute heavy load test showed clear dips in performance, which is a sign that thermal throttling kicks in to manage heat. It’s worth noting that all of these tests were done with Realme’s “GT Mode” enabled, which pushes the hardware to its peak performance.
Crazy 7000mAh battery and crazy battery consumption
One standout spec is the phone’s massive 7000mAh battery, but it feels like just a spec when you play BGMI. In our 30-minute BGMI test, the battery of the phone dropped by 16%, which is a staggering number for a 30-minute gameplay. We test a lot of smartphones, and the average battery drop we see in a 30-minute BGMI test is around 9-10%. So, let’s hope Realme fixes it with an update, which should most likely happen.
But the good news is that it supports 120-watt fast charging. In our test, the phone went from 0 to 100% in just 42 minutes.
Performance tests did tell us it’s a Flagship Killer
If you’re someone who trusts the numbers, the Realme GT 7 delivers. It scored over 1.8 million points on AnTuTu, which is in true flagship territory.
Geekbench scores also placed it well ahead of competitors in the same bracket. On paper, there’s no denying the power this device brings to the table.
Final thoughts
The Realme GT 7 is an exciting phone. It offers exceptional specs for its expected price, and for most users, the performance, even with minor fluctuations, will be more than satisfactory. Gamers will appreciate the high frame rate support, while power users will love the benchmark numbers and quick charging.
Yes, it heats up. Yes, 120 FPS isn’t consistent. But no, those aren’t deal-breakers, especially considering how well-rounded the rest of the package is.
Stay tuned for our full review coming soon, where we’ll explore the cameras, display, and software in more depth. For now, the Realme GT 7 looks like a promising gaming phone if you’re looking for one!
