OnePlus 3T vs OnePlus 3: A look at what’s changed?
HIGHLIGHTS

OnePlus 3T brings improvements in terms of performance and battery life though at a slightly premium price

OnePlus 3T is now official and it brings significant enhancements to OnePlus 3, one of 2016's best smartphone under $400 price range. OnePlus 3T comes almost five months after the launch of OnePlus 3, which would leave many OnePlus 3 buyers disappointed.

So here is what's new with the OnePlus 3T in comparison with OnePlus 3 and should you really be disappointed if you own OnePlus 3? Let's take a look

Design and Display: OnePlus 3T is basically a souped up version of OnePlus 3, so there is just no difference in terms of physical appearance and external design. OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 3 have same dimensions – 152.7 x 74.7 x 7.4 mm and both the devices weigh 158 grams.

OnePlus 3T offers the same aluminium unibody design like OnePlus 3, which feels comfortable to hold and offers better grip. OnePlus 3T also comes in new colour – gunmetal grey replacing graphite. OnePlus is retaining the soft gold colour variant which was introduced very recently with OnePlus 3.

OnePlus 3T also gets the same 5.5-inch Full HD optic AMOLED display seen on the OnePlus 3. As we observed in our OnePlus 3 review, the display offers fairly balanced colours and great viewing angles. There is no major change here for the OnePlus 3 owners but if you are using any other premium flagship, the display might seem underwhelming.

Performance and Battery Life: OnePlus 3T's biggest selling point is the updated specifications and improved battery life. OnePlus 3T offers improved performance thanks to the updated Snapdragon 821 chipset coupled with 6GB RAM and Adreno 530 GPU.

Yes, there is not much difference on paper but Snapdragon 821 promises efficiency. Qualcomm says Snapdragon 821 runs much cooler than Snapdragon 820 and consumes less power, which should help preserve battery life. OnePlus 3T is one of the very few smartphones to house Snapdragon 821 chipset. Google Pixel series, LeEco Le Pro 3 and Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe are the only other devices to feature Qualcomm's latest chipset.

Google Pixel and Pixel XL perform really well with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821 processor. It will be interesting to see how much difference Snapdragon 821 brings to the performance here considering the device still runs Marshmallow and not Android 7.0 Nougat.

OnePlus 3T ups the ante with the use of 3400mAh battery, a welcome 13 percent bump in capacity. With the bigger battery, OnePlus 3T now comes closer to Google's Pixel XL and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge in terms of battery capacity. OnePlus 3T should easily last over a day in comparison to moderate one day battery life offered by OnePlus 3.

OnePlus 3T also comes with company's proprietary Dash Charge technology, which dives away from Qualcomm's popular Quick Charge feature. Google recently advised OEMs to use standard charging technology for faster updates but OnePlus is not abiding for now.

Dash Charger, however, manages to refill the device to 60 percent in half an hour. The charger manages to fast charge even when the device is in use.

Camera: OnePlus 3T uses the same 16-megapixel primary camera available on the OnePlus 3. OnePlus 3T gains Intelligent Pixel Technology, which should help reduce noise in low light. The primary image sensor also gets scratch-resistant sapphire lens and improved EIS while recording video.

OnePlus 3T gets its biggest camera update in an unexpected department. OnePlus has replaced the 8MP fixed focus snapper on OnePlus 3 with a new 16MP Samsung image sensor with PDAF. OnePlus is promising major difference with selfies in low light conditions.

Storage and Price: OnePlus has always offered more memory than peers right from the launch of the OnePlus One in 2014. This time around, OnePlus is upgrading the memory to 128GB while retaining the 64GB as the standard variant.

OnePlus 3T definitely costs more than its sibling. OnePlus 3T starts at $439 (approximately Rs 29,800) for the 64GB variant while the 128GB variant will set you back by $479 (approximately Rs 32,500). Sure the new OnePlus 3T comes at a premium but the pricing seems justified considering the updated specifications and improved battery life.
