Comparison: Leica-powered Huawei P9 dual-lens camera vs competition
HIGHLIGHTS

The Huawei P9 offers Leica-powered dual-lens camera, so let’s find out how it compares against the rest of the flagships

Huawei recently launched its flagship device, P9 in India at Rs. 39,999. While the phone sports some very impressive specifications, the highlight of the device is its 12MP dual-rear camera setup that has been made in collaboration with legendary German camera manufacturers, Leica. The Leica has provided Huawei with two SUMMARIT f/2.2 lenses for use on the two rear cameras. The phone itself uses two Sony IMX286 Exmor RS image sensors. One of the sensors is used to capture the chrominance or colour data, while the other captures in monochrome or black and white. The monochrome sensor adds detail to a photograph, while the chrominance sensor adds color. The images from the two sensors are then combined together to create vibrant and detailed images using the Picture Quality Algorithm that has been co-engineered with Leica.

To see how good the camera on the Huawei P9 is, here is how it stacks up against other flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, OnePlus 3, and the LG G5.

Huawei P9 Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge OnePlus 3 LG G5

As one can see, from the table above, only the Huawei P9 and the LG G5 offer dual-rear cameras, while the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and the OnePlus 3 have to make do with single sensors. However, the way the LG G5 uses its two sensors is way different. Unlike the Huawei P9, which uses both cameras to take a single picture, the G5 uses the 16MP sensor to take most photos, while the 8MP camera is used to take wide angle shots. Further, while other phones only have one focusing system, Huawei’s camera only one to use laser and contrast to focus on subjects. Huawei is also the only company amongst the four to collaborate with professional camera manufacturers like Leica. All these features combine to ensure that the Huawei P9 offers one of the best smartphone cameras in the market.
