Solaris, which is known as an operating system for servers, was brought to desktop computers through Project OpenSolaris and offers features such as DTrace, ZFS Filesystems, Predictive Self Healing & SMF and Virtualization with Zones. OpenSolaris is available for anyone to download for free and use on their commodity hardware. With many advance features and reputation of being a scalable and stable operating system, Solaris and its open-sourced release OpenSolaris, is now a very popular as a general purpose operating system platform.
