Personal Finance in Claude explained: How much of your bank data it sees and how it works

Checking your bank account balance is simple. Checking your money? Not quite so much. The right information lies buried in three banking applications, a credit card bill, and an accounting of a subscription that you intended to unsubscribe from. Anthropic hopes to have Claude get you those answers. Personal Finance in Claude allows you to connect your bank and credit card accounts and to ask natural-language queries about them, such as where your income has gone. It resembles a chatbot combined with a calculator. It assumes that you will give AI access to a one-way view of your finances. Here is what it can see and what it cannot access.
What Claude can see
Begin with the one that causes concern for all. You don’t give your bank password to Claude. You log into your bank account via Plaid – a platform connecting apps to banks – and grant Claude access there.
As for the accounts you choose, he will get to know the bank name, the account name, type, last four digits, balance, credit limit, and up to two years of transactions on those accounts. The accounts you choose not to disclose remain a secret. Two years of midnight purchases are a lot to reveal.
Read only means read only
Personal Finance is not able to physically move, manage, or invest your money. It will not make transfers from one account to another and make payments. Anthropic claims Personal Finance does not provide investment advice. Imagine an analyst with a magnifying glass but without signing rights.
An example provided by Anthropic shows a payday ten days away. Ask about the whereabouts of your money, and Claude sums your expenses in all accounts, dividing them into categories. The demo gives us a total of $4,309.37, with more than half spent on rent and utilities, and $1,024.51 on food and beverages. Ask whether this is normal, and it checks previous months. Ask how much you have left until payday, and it tells you about four more expenses to go, leaving you with $1,393.22.
It is on the lookout for problems. It can recognize problems like double billing, surprise charges, and an annual bill that steadily increases over the year through all your accounts. If you ask it to calculate your APR, it adds up the interest you have paid. Need a spending trend graph, a payment deadline calendar, or a personal dashboard? Claude can create one that you can continue adjusting.
Privacy and the caveats
Discussions within the Personal Finance forum are not utilized for training Anthropic's models. All information shared beyond the forum is governed by your existing privacy policy. You have the option to disconnect your account anytime, and Claude will be unable to access any of the information attached to it. Many finance applications tend to sell their services and products. Personal Finance has none of that.
Claude could be mistaken. Anthropic admits that explicitly. How do you know what lies behind a number? Check the big numbers with your bank. Good suggestion.
