From ‘Fake UE5 Clip’ to full map: The complete GTA 6 leak timeline
GTA VI did not need another headline. After all, it is the most anticipated video game of the decade and resides on a mountain of hype which one can see from Vice Beach. But no, someone actually managed to chip away at that mountain of hype. The leaker appears to treat Rockstar’s most valuable intellectual property like a content calendar. Here is how four days became an industry event.

August 18: “It’s Just a Good Fake”
It begins in small fashion, just as it always does. A video of Jason (that is, the real one) casually shooting some hoops in a basketball game comes out online. Of course, the internet’s default reaction had been been denial, as Unreal Engine 5 has become very adept at creating realistic fakes and everyone collectively assumes this is one of them.
That assumption lasts a few hours before the same leaker leaks a second video, followed by a third, which happens to be the full map for GTA 6. Not a mock-up of the map. The actual map. Now all talk of fakes and Unreal Engine 5 videos stops. Is this old 2023 leak footage, or brand new build footage? In the meantime, the legal team at Take-Two becomes engaged in whack-a-mole activity, taking down as many reuploads as come out.
August 19: The “Running Out of Content” Theory
On the second day, however, internet suspicions swing around yet again. The prevailing view is that the leaker has exhausted their inventory and is now merely capitalizing on their newfound clout. Typical leak cycle stuff.

In keeping with this pattern, there is one more video released. One features a radio station track that only came out in January 2025. That’s the detail that matters: it proves this footage can’t be old 2023 material, since the game clearly couldn’t have shipped a song that didn’t exist yet. Secondly, there is an in-game cutscene video, thus turning the leak from gameplay intrigue to story spoiler, a much trickier situation for anyone looking to go in blind at release time.

August 20: Polls, Plane Rides, and a Gun-Written Signature
That is when it gets truly weird. The leaker sets up a paid poll, where people can vote for which video will be released next. This is clever, it is outrageous, and it instantly bites them in the trust factor. When you are using community engagement mechanisms on leaked content, the logic goes, it probably means that you did not make the game in the first place, and that you are about to run out of materials soon.
And then, almost as a show of power, a video of plane gameplay gets dropped, and then, as if to make a meme hit out of it, there is a video of the leaker’s in-game character writing their name on the wall with a gun.
The Stock Market Notices Too
This is not only about forums and Discord leaks anymore. The shares of Take Two have fallen considerably with all the leaks going around, dropping from the $248 per share mark prior to August 18 to the $230 per share mark already on August 20. Considering the snapshots at different times, it can be said that the company has lost anywhere between $2 billion and $2.8 billion in market capitalization in 48 hours.
Where This Leaves Us
By August 20th, the leaker and whoever it really is behind the account does not seem to be showing any signs of letting up, while at the same time Rockstar and Take Two remain silent as ever. All that is known is that an unbelievable basketball video from Monday somehow became a map, a cut scene, a radio needle drop, a paid survey, and tagged wall in the space of just four days. So strap in for an exciting ride. GTA 6 has been memed a lot for its delays and now so close to release, it seems to have a few curveballs left to be thrown.
