Secret to why players keep coming back to BGMI

For a game that has already crossed hundreds of millions of downloads, retention is not just about adding new content but about staying relevant. According to Das, the answer lies in how BGMI positions itself.

“We don’t market BGMI as just a game. We market it as a culture. Our slogan is India Ki Heartbeat,” he said.  This idea of relatability plays a big role, especially with Gen Z players who expect authenticity from the brands they engage with.

He also pointed out that frequent updates keep the experience fresh. With new content rolling out roughly every two months, players always have something new to explore.

He said, “We are also very self-aware on social media. We engage with fans, we read comments, and we act on feedback. Everything that players say gets categorised and sent to developers. And when players see that their feedback leads to real changes, they value it. That’s why retention happens naturally. We don’t chase it. It comes as an outcome.’”

Favourite 4.3 update feature and the nostalgia factor

When asked about his favourite feature in the 4.3 update, Das immediately leaned into nostalgia. He spoke about growing up collecting cricket cards and how those small collectibles captured moments in time. That idea now finds its way into BGMI through the new card collection system. Players can earn cards that represent achievements and milestones, and these sit in their inventory as both a memory and a badge of progress.

In addition to this, there is also a social layer built around it. Players can trade cards with friends, exchange duplicates, and even dismantle extras for rewards. There is also a collector level that reflects how extensive a player’s collection is, adding another layer of progression. The feature, he explained, goes beyond simple collecting by tying into collaborations and themed sets, including the current Evolving Universe theme.

Das also highlighted how this system can evolve further. Plans for esports-related cards featuring player stats are already in discussion, which could bring a deeper connection between competitive play and in-game progression.

He concluded his response by saying, ‘That’s why it’s my favourite feature. Because of its immense potential and how India has grown along with cards, and the potential it has to make this a community-driven thing.’

Challenges that came along the way

Building a feature-rich update like BGMI 4.3 comes with its own set of hurdles. A single feature might have been quite challenging for the developers and we hardly get to see the struggling side. Talking about one challenge that they faced during the BGMI 4.3 update, Das said it was introducing WhatsApp login.

While it may sound simple on the surface, Das explained that integrating a new login system requires extensive coordination, testing, and security validation. The teams worked closely with multiple partners to ensure that the feature functions smoothly across devices.

‘Our Korea team worked with Meta and everyone involved to make this a success. Now WhatsApp login is here, and it feels great because BGMI is played on a portable device. You might not have Facebook on all devices, but you will have WhatsApp,” Das said.

Return of the Ancient Secret mode

Ancient Secret Mode came out back in August 2020. It captured players’ fancy and became a talking point soon after its launch. And in the 4.3 update, this popular mode is back. When asked about why they decided to bring back an old mode, Das explained that not every player gets to experience every mode when it launches. Life gets in the way, whether it is exams, travel, or simply taking a break from the game. With updates arriving frequently, some players miss out on popular modes entirely.

To address this, the team decided to bring back older modes based on community demand.

Das said, ‘We also did a survey across Instagram, Discord, and in-game. An overwhelming majority asked for Ancient mode. So we brought it back.

‘It serves two purposes. First, people who missed it get to experience it. Second, people want to relive nostalgia. There’s also a third aspect. In a squad of four, two people may have experienced it and two are new. The new players experience it through the eyes of experienced players.

‘It’s a very beautiful feeling. The goosebumps you get when you play something for the first time, you don’t get that again. So half the squad is reliving memories and half is experiencing it fresh.

‘This is where we don’t just say we listen to users, we actually do it.’

Importance of the Evolving Universe theme

The Evolving Universe theme introduces a different kind of gameplay loop, one that changes as the match progresses. Das described it as a system where players move through different tiers during a match, unlocking new areas as they advance. This creates a sense of progression within a single game rather than relying only on external rewards. And this was also a major reason behind BGMI 4.3 update’s new theme – the Evolving Universe.

Das said, ‘When we say an evolving universe, it means the battleground is no longer static. Areas that were not accessible become accessible. So every match becomes unique. There is a story in every match.

It also separates the wheat from the chaff. If you are good, you reach higher tiers faster and unlock better areas. Thus, it rewards players who take fights and creates fairness because players who reach the final circle have earned better loot. As a result, matches become more intense and meaningful.’

Collaborations and future plans

Collaborations continue to play a key role in BGMI’s content strategy, but Das made it clear that they are not approached with a one-size-fits-all mindset. Some collaborations are designed to attract new players, while others are meant to engage the existing community. The idea is to cater to a diverse player base where different users connect with different themes.

‘We have collaborated with Royal Enfield, with creators like CarryMinati, and even smaller viral creators. The player base is very diverse. In the same squad, you will find different types of players. So every collaboration has a specific purpose,’ he said.

Now, the 4.3 update also has something special in store for all cricket fans. Thanks to BGMI’s collaboration with Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, several elements are set to arrive in the game soon. There are collectibles, vehicle skins, special outfits and much more. In fact, players can also access new Photo Booth POIs in Erangel and Livik that feature virtual CSK players.

Das added that the team is closely watching how players react to these collaborations. If the response is positive, more such collaborations could follow.

He said, ‘If the reaction is good, we will continue. For us, players are the decision makers.’

Das also revealed that BGMI experimenting with new ideas like the BGMI Cricket League, which aims to bring fresh experiences into the game.

‘We also have BGMI Cricket League coming, which is something we have never done before. It will bring new experiences inside the game. Also, we are bringing back fan-favourite items like the Blood Raven X Suit. These are all driven by fan demand,’ he said,

Beyond sports, BGMI has collaborated with brands, creators, and even viral personalities, reflecting the variety of its audience. The underlying strategy, Das says, remains the same- Listen to players, experiment with ideas, and build experiences that feel relevant to the community.
