Apple plans OLED upgrades for MacBook Air, iPad Air and iPad mini: Report

Apple is reportedly preparing major updates for some of its most popular devices, including the MacBook Air, iPad Air, and iPad mini. According to Bloomberg, the tech giant plans to introduce OLED displays to these products. The company is said to be testing new versions of each product that feature OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens. This display technology offers deeper blacks, richer colours, and better contrast compared to the LCD screens currently used. This could make the upcoming models more appealing to consumers.

Among the three products, the iPad mini is expected to be the first to receive the upgrade. The report states that an OLED-equipped version of the iPad mini could launch as early as next year. The new display may also raise the tablet’s price by about $100, as OLED panels are more expensive.

The iPad mini was last refreshed at the end of 2024 with a faster chip and support for the Apple Intelligence platform. While plans for the OLED upgrade are still being finalised, Apple often adjusts timelines during development. For example, its rumoured 18-inch foldable iPad has reportedly been delayed until 2029.

As for the iPad Air, the next version expected in spring 2026 will still use an LCD display, but a later generation will switch to OLED. The entry-level iPad will likely continue using LCD technology for now.

Apple is also said to be planning OLED screens for its Mac lineup. The MacBook Pro is expected to be the first Mac to adopt OLED, followed by the MacBook Air. The Air’s OLED upgrade is not expected until 2028.

For those unaware, Apple first introduced OLED in the Apple Watch in 2015, later expanding it to the iPhone X in 2017.
