Apple reportedly planning Vision Air headset and smart glasses to take on Meta by 2027

Apple is reportedly working on a new wave of head-mounted devices. According to renowned supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the tech giant is developing multiple products under its Vision series and smart glasses category. While Apple is skipping any major headset release in 2026, the next few years are expected to bring a big push into this growing market.

Kuo shared on Medium that Apple sees head-mounted devices as the next big thing in consumer electronics. Apple currently has at least seven such devices in development, including a lightweight Vision Air headset and Ray-Ban-style smart glasses. With these new launches, Apple seems ready to go head-to-head with Meta, which has been dominating the space with its Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Vision Air

Among the devices in development is the Vision Air, a mixed reality (XR) headset which is expected to go into production by the third quarter of 2027. It is said to be 40 percent lighter than the current Vision Pro and come with a more affordable price tag.

The weight reduction will likely be achieved by using plastic instead of glass, extensive magnesium alloy use and fewer sensors. The Vision Air is expected to be powered by Apple’s latest iPhone processor.

Smart glasses

Alongside the headset, Apple is also planning to launch smart glasses that resemble Ray-Bans. These glasses won’t have any display but will support gesture controls, voice commands, music playback, video recording and AI-powered environmental sensing. Scheduled for mass production in 2Q27, the smart glasses could ship 3 to 5 million units in the first year alone.

While more advanced XR glasses and other accessories are also in development, Apple’s real challenge, Kuo says, will be building “AI-powered operating system and software.”
