Jio launches VoWiFi service in select circles while Airtel adds four new regions and new devices under VoWiFi calling
HIGHLIGHTS

Jio has reportedly rolled out its VoWiFi services in some circles.

Airtel is also said to have expanded its VoWiFi service to some new regions.

Some Xiaomi and Samsung phones are reportedly receiving VoWiFi updates for Airtel.

These are surely trying times for telecom operators, whose ARPUs (Average Revenue Per User) have fallen significantly over the past few years. The top three telecom companies, Vodafone-Idea, Airtel and Jio, recently announced revised tariff plans and this move might have surely irked the standard consumer who has to pay more out of their pocket. However, in a bid to enable more facilities for their users, Airtel recently rolled out VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi service) in select regions and now, Jio has reportedly done the same. As per an ET Telecom report, Jio has launched its VoWiFi services in select regions, including Delhi NCR and Chennai.

While the report doesn’t mention all the circles in which Jio users can now avail VoWiFi services, it mentions Delhi NCR and Chennai regions. A previous report suggested that the service is also being made available in Kerala, Maharashtra and Kolkata circles. The service enables users to place voice calls over a WiFi network instead of a cellular network. This can be really helpful when your cell network is weak but there’s good WiFi service available. With Airtel, users can only make VoWiFi calls when they are connected to the Airtel Xstream Fiber broadband service. However, Jio’s VoWiFi calling is said to not be restricted to any particular WiFi service provider and can also be availed when users are connected to public WiFi hotspots.

Airtel has also reportedly expanded its WiFi calling service. The telcos’ service was previously announced in six circles and it is apparently now available for four more regions, TelecomTalk reports. Airtel users in Gujarat, UP (West), Kerala and Maharashtra circles will now be able to avail VoWiFi calling benefits. The service was previously made available for Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Mumbai and Kolkata.

As mentioned earlier, Airtel’s VoWiFi service is only available while connected to the Airtel Xstream Fiber broadband service. Alongside rolling out the service in new regions, Airtel has also enabled the service for Xiaomi Redmi Y3, Redmi 7A and the Redmi Note 7 Pro, along with some Samsung handsets. You can head over to your device’s network settings to check whether the VoWiFi setting option is available or not.
