SIM scams are rising in India. Recently, there have been many cases of SIM swaps and fake SIM scams. To prevent and fight these frauds, the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has implemented some rules in India. This was supposed to happen two months back but got delayed for some reason. However, today, on December 1, these rules have been implemented. Let’s check out the rules.
Restriction on Bulk SIM cards
Now, you can’t get SIM cards in bulk from one ID. You are only able to have nine SIM cards from one ID. However, businesses can get bulk SIM cards.
Verification and Registration for SIM dealers
Now only authorised dealers can sell or issue SIM cards. They must complete a verification process to register themselves. Additionally, telecom operators are required to register franchisees, distributors, and point-of-sale agents within 12 months to prevent the issuance of SIM cards to individuals of questionable repute.

However, if someone tries to sell the SIM cards without the registration, they may incur penalties of up to ₹10 lakh.
E-KYC Mandatory
If you want to get a new SIM, submitting your digital KYC is mandatory now. Only ID will not be enough from now.
Delay in the Re-issuance of Inactive SIMs
If your SIM gets turned off, you can’t get a new one for 90 days. This will give you enough time to turn it back on, so your phone number doesn’t accidentally go to someone else.
Government-led Initiatives
The Government has also made a website called Sanchaar Saathi. This website can be used if your phone is lost or stolen. They have also integrated an AI-based software called ASTR. You can use this AI software to stop illegal phone connections.
