The Vivo NEX was the first phone to find a way to work around the pesky display notch. With a motorised front camera that pops out of the body, Vivo managed to shave the bezels from all sides making the panel on the phone truly bezel-less. However, the Chinese giant doesn’t seem to be in the mood to stop innovating any time soon.

A new variant of the Vivo NEX now comes with a second display on the back. Called the Vivo NEX Dual Display, the new flagship houses a second AMOLED panel at the back and does away with the pop-up camera. It can be considered a way for Vivo to come up with something new, and yet keep its selfie-crazy audience satiated.

There is of course the flagship Snapdragon 845 under the hood coupled with a whopping 10GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. On the front is a 6.39-inch FullHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 91.63 percent screen-to-body ratio. The front has no bezels whatsoever, and in this case, there’s no front facing camera as well. On the back, there’s another 5.49-inch Full HD AMOLED panel placed under the glass panel. This enables selfie enthusiasts to use the rear-facing dual cameras to take portrait shots.

The primary camera on the back has a 12MP Sony IMX 363 sensor with f/1.79 aperture and 4-axis OIS. Furthermore, there’s a 2MP night vision camera accompanied by a 3D TOF sensor wiht f/1.3 aperture. The TOF (Time of Flight) camera enables accurate distance measurement and 3D modeling of user’s face to allow a more robust facial recognition and beautification features.

A light ring around the camera lights up to show incoming notifications and provide background light for selfies.

The Vivo NEX Dual Display also has an in-display fingerprint sensor and a 3,500mAh battery along with 22.5W fast charging. Android 9.0 Pie comes out of the box baked in a Vivo’S FunTouch OS. The phone is offered in two colours — Ice Blue and Star Purple. The phone will go on sale in China on December 29th and will be priced around $275 (approx 19,800).

A couple of things to note here is that keeping two displays on at the same time will suck up the battery much faster. Keeping the displays scratch-free and protected may also be a difficult proposition. Furthermore, Vivo is not the first phone to incorporate a dual-display phone. Neither is it the first to offer 10 gigs of RAM. The Meizu Pro 7 used the same mechanism to let people take selfies using the rear camera, while the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition also offer 10GB of RAM.

What’s interesting is the fact that most of the cutting-edge innovation this year came from the popular Chinese brands that have so far lived under the shadows of the likes of Apple and Samsung. With the notch polarising opinions among users and critics, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi and the likes worked hard on innovating the design to offer unique bezel-free solutions and in cases like this, even add a whole new display to work around it.

How well the two displays work together is something we are keen to observe when the phone lands up in our test labs. It will also be interesting to see how much of an impact 10GB of RAM will make to the user experience.
