Samsung Galaxy S9 patent hints at front-facing fingerprint sensor
HIGHLIGHTS

A patent filed by Samsung reveals that their upcoming Galaxy S9 smartphone could feature a small notch which houses a fingerprint scanner on the lower side of the display. The notch could be similar to the one found on the Essential phone and the iPhone.

Samsung’s next year flagship device, the Galaxy S9, could sport a fingerprint scanner on the front of the smartphone. Previous reports suggested that the smartphone could also come with a 3D facial recognition system, similar to the iPhone X. A German website GalaxyClub first spotted the patent which was filed by the company on KIPRIS, South Korea’s Intellectual Property info search engine.

If the information displayed in the patent claim is to be believed, the Galaxy S9 will have a small recess or notch built into the bottom of its display. The report states that this recess will house a small fingerprint scanner, similar to the Touch ID found on Apple’s iPhones or the camera notch seen on the Essential phone. The patent describes that this will be done while maintaining minimum bezels on the display of the smartphone.

The patent is filed under the title “Cryptic Display Apparatus and Method of Manufacturing Display Apparatus”. Apart from the two regular ways of placing a fingerprint scanner, at the rear or under the home button, it shows a third option for positioning it.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is rumoured to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC. Samsung has reportedly purchased almost the entire first batch of the Snapdragon 845 chipsets. The smartphone’s rumoured specifications suggest that it will feature a design similar to the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. The Snapdragon 845 platform is also expected to be based on 10nm architecture and feature a combination of Cortex A75 cores, Adreno 630 graphics and an X20 LTE modem.
