OnePlus 6T’s in-display fingerprint sensor also registers wet fingers and cuts to facilitate faster recognition: OnePlus
HIGHLIGHTS

On its forum page, OnePlus claims that the 6T’s fingerprint sensor becomes faster with use as it records areas of the finger that weren't registered in the initial fingerprint setup stage.

On its forum page, OnePlus has published an article stating how the fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 6T becomes faster over time and repeated usage. The forum post also goes on to highlight how the in-display fingerprint sensor worked on the OnePlus 6T and that the technology has been in development since the days of the OnePlus 5T.

OnePlus’ forum post reads, “Every time a user successfully unlocks the phone with their fingerprint, the sensor also records areas of the finger that weren't registered in the initial fingerprint setup stage. This fingerprint data is then added to the data the phone already holds, making it more complete. So, every time the in-display fingerprint sensor is used, it gathers more data about the user’s fingerprint. This means that over time, the phone will unlock even faster. The sensor’s algorithms are also able to figure out when the user’s fingerprint is different than usual – if their finger is wet or if they have a cut on it, etc. In these cases, once the phone is successfully unlocked, the algorithms adds this new fingerprint data to the existing data to improve unlock speeds under these conditions in the future.”

To reiterate what the blog post reads, users' fingerprint data is collected every time the user unlocks the phone. This means that any changes in the position of the figure on the display or the characteristics of the finger like cuts, etc. are recorded and kept for fast unlocks in the future. In our review of the OnePlus 6T, we said that the in-display fingerprint sensor is slower than the traditional fingerprint sensor found on previous generation OnePlus devices. How this has changed over the course of use is something we will revisit and tell you. However, it is nice to see the technology evolve without the need for added hardware or software tinkering, ensuring that it performs better with usage.

In case you are wondering how screen unlock works, OnePlus says that when a user places their finger on the 6T’s in-display fingerprint sensor, it sends out light to illuminate the finger, allowing the sensor to “see” the user’s fingerprint. During the testing stage, OnePlus discovered that green light gives the best results when it comes to recognizing fingerprints, which is why the company went for this colour.
