Nokia at IFA 2014: 3 new Lumia phones & selfies galore
HIGHLIGHTS

Nokia showed off three new Lumia phones- the Lumia 830, the Lumia 735 and the Lumia 730, along with accessories for Lumia phones and revealed details on the new Denim update for Windows Phone.

Nokia took the stage at IFA 2014 in Berlin today and revealed three new Lumia Windows Phone smartphones, a bunch of accessories for Lumia devices and a Lumia ‘Denim’ update (translation: Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1).

First up, the Lumia phones.

Nokia Lumia 830

Microsoft claims that the Nokia Lumia 830 (pictured above) is the slimmest and lightest Lumia phone to date, measuring 8.5mm and weighing 150 grams. The Lumia 830 sports a sizeable 5-in ClearBlack IPS LCD display with HD (1280x720p) resolution covered with Gorilla Glass 3. It’s powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB RAM, and all of it runs on a 2200 mAH removable battery. Imaging is handled by a 10MP primary camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) and a 1MP front camera. In terms of storage space, the Lumia 830 comes with 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded with a microSD card up to 128GB, along with 15GB of free cloud storage on Microsoft’s OneDrive.

The Lumia 830 carries forward the Lumia 930’s design and comes with a metal frame and polycarbonate back. It will be available globally this month for EUR 330 (Rs. 26,200 approx.) in bright orange, bright green, black and white colours.

Nokia Lumia 730 & Lumia 735

The only difference between the Lumia 730 and the 735 is that while the former offers dual-SIM support, the latter supports 4G/LTE networks. Nokia has tried to tap into the selfie zeitgeist with these two phones and spent a considerable amount of time during its conference talking about how ‘great’ these phones were at shooting selfies.

To ensure selfies that aren’t terrible, Nokia has packed both the Lumias with a full HD 5MP wide-angle front camera with a focal length of 24 mm. To further cater to our narcissistic tendencies, both phones will also come pre-installed with Nokia’s new Lumia Selfie app that offers editing/filter options and the ability to shoot selfies with the primary 6.7MP camera (of which we know little).

Moving away from imaging, unlike Nokia who just seemed content to talk only about selfies, both Lumias are powered by the same Snapdragon 400 processor as the Lumia 830 and 1GB RAM. Both phones sport 4.7-in OLED 720p displays and come with 8GB of internal storage (expandable to 128GB via microSD cards) and 15GB free cloud storage on OneDrive. Both phones run on 2200mAH batteries.

Both the Lumia 730 and 735 will be launched in September and will be priced at EUR 199 (Rs. 15,800 approx.) and EUR 219 (Rs. 17,400 approx.) respectively. The phones will be launched in bright orange, bright green, dark grey and white colours.

Accessories

Nokia also revealed a couple of new accessories for its Lumia devices, the first of which is the awkwardly named Microsoft Screen Sharing for Lumia Phones (or just the HD-10). The HD-10 includes an NFC plate and a circular device that you connect to your TV via HDMI. By tapping your Lumia phone (with NFC) on the plate, you will immediately be able to mirror your phone on your TV.

Nokia also showed off a bunch of wireless chargers including the DT-903, which glows to notify you of incoming messages, calls etc., the DT-601, a tiny wireless charger and the CC-3086 wireless charging shell.

The Denim Update

Nokia also revealed that Update 1 to Windows Phone 8.1 will be released along with the new Lumia devices to all Lumia devices running WP 8/8.1. The Denim update brings along with it a couple of interesting features including an alpha version of Cortana to users in India, Australia and Canada. You’ll also be able to arrange apps into folders or create a start screen with access to a particular set of apps or settings. The Denim update will also bring with a bunch of improvements to the camera software to Lumia phones. Expect the update to roll out to Lumia phones this month.
