Nokia 3 smartphone users can soon expect their devices to receive the Android Oreo beta update. HMD Global’s Chief Product Officer, Juho Sarvikas revealed the news on Twitter saying that the Nokia 3 Beta Labs is “right around the corner.” He also said that the Nokia 2 will directly be updated to Android 8.1 Oreo, skipping Android 8.0 Oreo.
Sarvikas says that as the Nokia 2 comes with 1GB RAM, it will get memory optimisation features by directly jumping to Android 8.1 Oreo. The news comes a week after the company started seeding the Android 8.1 Oreo update for Nokia 8 beta testers. The new update will bring core Oreo features to the device like Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, Notification Dots, Autofill for passwords and Android Instant Apps.
In terms of specifications, the Nokia 3 is powered by a Quad-core MediaTek MT6737 with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. It sports a 5-inch HD display and packs a 2630 mAh battery. The smartphone features 8MP sensors for both the front and back cameras.
The Nokia 2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 SoC with 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM. It features a 5-inch HD display and comes with an 8MP primary camera and a 5MP front-facing sensor. It is backed by a 4100mAh battery which the company claims can last for up to 2 days and currently runs on Android Nougat. You can read our first impressions of the Nokia 2 here.
Nokia had previously rolled out the Android Oreo beta update for its Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 smartphones in China and the company is also rumoured to be working on the Nokia 1. The Nokia 1 is speculated to be a budget smartphone running on Android Oreo (Go Edition). The smartphone is expected to be powered by a MediaTek processor, possibly the newly announced MT6739, coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB storage.
Nokia is also expected to unveil some of its latest smartphones like the Nokia 9 and a prototype of the alleged Nokia 10 at MWC 2018. You can read more about what Nokia could launch at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona here.
