Alcatel announces Idol 4, Idol 4S flagships at MWC 2016
HIGHLIGHTS

While the Alcatel Idol 4 has a 5.2 inch display, the Idol 4S is the more premium device with a 5.5 inch display. Here a look at what's inside both smartphones.

While the Mobile World Congress officially kicks-off on February 22, many smartphone manufacturers are utilising the weekend to announce key products in their portfolios. Last evening, Alcatel announced its new flagship smartphones – the Idol 4 and the Idol 4S. The new devices are an upgrade to last year's Onetouch Idol 3.

Coming to the specifications of both devices, the Alcatel Idol 4 has a 5.2 inch 1080p display, a 13MP primary camera, 8MP front camera, 3GB RAM and a Snapdragon 617 Octa-core processor, whereas, the more premium Idol 4S sports a 5.5 inch 1440X2560 display, Snapdragon 652 processor, a 16MP primary camera and 3GB of RAM. Both devices feature sound designed in collaboration with JBL and Waves and include two 3.6 watt speakers with HiFi surround sound. The only shortfall in the specs of both devices is their storage. While the Alcatel Idol 4 comes with 16GB of internal memory, the Idol 4S comes with 32GB of memory. So, the cool speakers on the devices may just be rendered useless without any space for actual music on the devices.

The more premium Idol 4S smartphone also features a side button called the 'Boomkey', which can be customised to do various functions. One can assign a shortcut of their choice to the Boomkey, such as, camera, music, certain apps, etc. Alcatel has also added a Google Cardboard style box that houses the retail unit of the phones and also acts as an entry-level VR headset.
