Huawei has revealed that they are working on a beta version of Android Marshmallow for their Honor 7. The company is also gearing up to launch the Kirin 950 SoC.
In a event yesterday Huawei’s marketing executive Xi Zhao has revealed that, the company is working on a Beta version of Android Marshmallow and their latest phone, the Honor 7 might get it first. The company said that the Beta build will be available for users in four weeks. Huawei hasn't given any timeline by when either Honor 7 or other Honor devices will get the final build, but it is still a start.
It is a preconceived notion that if you want an Android Smartphone which is running or might get new Android updates at the earliest, you ought to buy a Nexus or Motorola phone. However, if Honor does come out with an early update for its Honor 7, the company might be able to keep up with other phone companies. The Honor 7 is currently running on Android Lollipop which is layered under the highly customised EMUI form Honor. The EMUI does not feature any app drawers but instead apps are kept on the multiple homescreens.
The Honor 7 features an all unibody metal design and a fingerprint sensor at the back. The 5.2-inch phone is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 935 SoC which is made by Honor’s parent company Huawei. This SoC features an octa-core processor which includes two quad-core clusters based on ARM’s Cortex-A53 architecture. While the first quad-core cluster is clocked at 2.2GHz, the other cluster is clocked at 1.5GHz. This in turn, churns out a very commendable performance output as we have seen in our Honor 7 review. However, the processor is still slow compared to the Exynos 7420 or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 which are being used by current flagship phones. According to the press invites shared on Weibo, which are being sent out by Huawei, the company is all geared up to launch their new Kirin 950 SoC on November 5th. According to previous rumors the new SoC might feature an octa-core processor. It is expected to have two quad-core clusters with four cores based on ARM’s Cortex-A72 architecture which will be clocked at 2.4GHz. The other four-cores might use ARM’s Cortex-A57 architecture. According to the previous leak it might use a Mali-T880 GPU. The chipset is also expected to support 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM. If rumors and previous leaks are to be believed, the Kirin 950 will be at least 20-30% faster than the current Exynos 7420 SoC.
