HP Labs showcases new glasses-free 3D display tech for mobile devices
HIGHLIGHTS

Researchers at HP Labs have developed a new type of glasses-free 3D display for mobile devices. This tech is supposed to give wider viewing angles.

Hewlett-Packard has been hard at work developing glasses-free 3D display technology for the mobile platform. This tech will enable you to consume 3D content on your smartphone/table without glasses, and reportedly features exceptional viewing angles, with ‘HP Labs Multi-Directional Backlight Technology.’

This isn’t the first time that we have seen glasses-free 3D on the mobile platform. Remember the LG Optimus 3D, Optimus 3D Max and the HTC Evo 3D? All three smartphones showed off glasses-free displays which were quite gimmicky in nature, and viewing 3D content on them led to headaches rather than the third dimension.

The only tech than manages to nail 3D on a small screen quite well was the Nintendo 3DS. The gaming device has a 3D toggle to move between 2D and 3D, increasing the depth perception as you moved the toggle. Even though the viewing angles were limited on the 3DS, the experience was quite good.

The tech that HP is working on shows off greater viewing angles. You can consider it as a sort of holographic image popping out of the display. The reason the display has such vibrant viewing angles is because the backlight of the display has “nanopatterned grooves that send blue, green and red in multiple directions, letting the LCD show only the light that would be seen from a given viewpoint.” There is still no information on when this technology will be made available to the public.

You can take a look at a video, which illustrates the features of HP’s glasses-free 3D display below.
