Hidden Easter eggs in Xiaomi Mi 8 teaser hint at Mi Mix 2S like thin-bezel display without a notch and in-display fingerprint sensor
HIGHLIGHTS

The Mi Bunny dressed up as a detective, the numeric 6 with illuminated ridges and a peculiar skyscraper in the background hint at Xiaomi’s next flagship device.

Xiaomi will launch its Mi 8 smartphone on May 30 in China and the company is teasing the upcoming launch via Weibo. The company has posted an image which shows that there are only 6 days left for the device’s launch. However, there seems to be something more going on in the background of the poster than what meets the eye. The company has left some clues in the image, hinting at the features of the upcoming smartphone. Right off the bat, the number 6 with illuminated ridges tips at the presence of an in-display fingerprint sensor on the Mi 8 and a rough translation of the text in the teaser reading, “Who is missing in the wind? This time really have ____ unlock.” hints at the same.

The Mi 8 is rumoured to feature a notch on top of its display that could house 3D depth-sensing modules for face recognition, similar to the iPhone X. However, if one closely observes the buildings in the background of the teaser image, they would notice that one of them is actually a thin-bezel smartphone with rounded edges. There also seems to be a power button on the right edge of the device. We can’t say for sure if it’s the Mi 8, but if it is, then there certainly isn't a notch on its display as the design closely resembles the Mi Mix 2S. Also, for those who are wondering, the text on the bottom of the image says, “There are six days left for Xiaomi’s 8th annual conference.“, where the company is expected to announce the smartphone.

Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship Mi 8 smartphone is speculated to feature a 6.2-inch OLED display with a 19:9 aspect ratio and FHD+ resolution. It is also rumoured to feature a notch on top but the teaser suggests otherwise. The phone will most likely be running on the latest Snapdragon 845 SoC and could feature 6GB RAM with 128GB of internal storage. A previous report hints that MIUI 10 will be pre-installed on the device. It is speculated to feature 20MP + 16MP rear cameras with f/1.7 and f/2.0 aperture respectively and on the front could be a 16MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens. The phone could be backed by a 3300 mAh battery and is rumoured to be priced around 2,999 Yuan (Rs 32,000 approx).
