Google takes on leaksters, officially reveals Pixel 4 design with square rear-camera module months ahead of launch
HIGHLIGHTS

Google reveals Pixel 4 design.

The handset will feature a square shaped rear-camera module.

It will also not sport a dual-tone textured glass on the back.

A new leak about the upcoming Google Pixel 4 series handset recently surfaced online. We saw some live images and renders of the alleged Pixel 4 XL where the handset was shown off from both the front and rear. This was followed by several other leaks around the Pixel 4 series, once again raising speculation that the new Pixel series could end up becoming the most leaked smartphone series of the year. Last year's Pixel 3 phones were indeed the most leaked flagship smartphones of the year.

This year though, Google seems to be getting ahead of the situation before Pixel 4 leaks flood the Internet. The company has gone ahead and officially teased the design of the Pixel 4 smartphone via its Twitter account. The company posted an image of the handset, showing off the phone's rear panel and a square rear-camera module, similar to the one seen in iPhone XI leaks. The image confirms that Google could finally equip the Pixel lineup with a dual camera.

On closer inspection of the Pixel 4 image, it seems like there is another cutout on top of the two cameras. While it is not known what it's for, it could be a time of flight sensor, or as rumours suggest, a spectral sensor that is already present on the Pixel 3. The spectral sensor enables the camera to deal with flickering lights or screens. The rear glass panel of the handset is also different this time. Unlike Pixel 3, there’s no two-tone texture or frosted glass on the bottom.

Talking a bit more about the optics, the sensor arrangement on the Pixel 4 is quite different from what OnLeak’s renders suggested. The two camera sensors are placed in a horizontal fashion and a dual-tone LED flash sits below. There’s also a small notch on the right of the LED module, which could house a mic. The power and volume buttons are placed on the handset’s right edge. As mentioned above, the square camera module is similar to what we have already seen on the alleged iPhone XI. However, the Apple smartphone is touted to come equipped with three sensors that are non-uniformly aligned.

While Google revealed the rear panel of the Pixel 4, a live image previously gave us a glimpse at its screen too. The smartphone is seen featuring a pill-shaped punch hole display design. You can read more about the previous leaks here.
