Budget Gionee P5w smartphone may come to India soon
HIGHLIGHTS

Gionee P5w is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek SOC and should add to the budget segment in the country.

Gionee has introduced a budget phone called the P5w, which might make its way to India. The phone is currently listed on the company’s global website and was also spotted on the import/export website Zauba. According to the listing on Zauba, more than a dozen pieces of the device were flown into the country from China. The device is expected to be priced at Rs. 6,352, as seen on the inventory. The listing though indicated that these may only be sample units and are likely to be here for test purposes, which further suggests that Gionee might introduce the phone in India.

According to the company's global website listing, the Gionee P5w has a plastic build and could be available in multiple colours. It has a 5 inch 720p IPS Oncell display and runs on a MediaTek MT 6735 SoC. This is the same 1.3 GHz quad-core SoC that we have seen on the Meizu M2 smartphone. There is 1GB of RAM on the phone and it offers 16GB of on-board storage, but whether it supports a microSD card is still unknown. The device carries a 2000mAh battery, which should be enough for decent battery life.

In the optics department, there is a 5MP rear camera on the phone, which supports autofocus and comes with LED flash. The phone has a 2MP camera on the front and supports dual SIM cards. The connectivity functions though only include 3G GSM, which is odd since the SoC is capable of supporting 4G connections. This could mean that the Indian version of the device may support 4G data networks, given the recent push behind the growth of 4G in the country.

The phone will be running on Android 5.1 Lollipop with Gionee’s Amigo UI running on top of it. The UI should include features like the Ami Lockscreen manager, Chameleon wallpaper app, etc. Another UI feature is Face Unlock and the company has claimed it does so under a second. The phone also incorporates DTS Audio, which, according to Gionee, will offer 3D Stereo surround sound.

While the pricing and availability of the Gionee P5w aren't known yet, the device is sure to face tough competition from the current market leaders in India.
