Corning to unveil Gorilla Glass 3 at CES 2013
HIGHLIGHTS

Corning, the makers of the scratch resistant Gorilla Glass for smartphones, has announced that they will be unveiling the third version of the Gorilla Glass at CES 2013, with the Native Damage Resistance feature.

Corning, the makers of the scratch resistant Gorilla Glass for smartphones and other portable devices, has announced that they will be unveiling the third version of the Gorilla Glass at CES next week.

It is a given that the third version should have improved strength. Additionally, Gorilla Glass 3 comes with tweaks at the molecular level, with the introduction of a proprietary feature called Native Damage Resistance (NDR). This feature is said to control flaws like knicks or scratches, and maintains the overall strength of the glass. What this means is that Gorilla Glass 3 is three times more scratch resistant, shows 40 percent reduction in the number of visible scratches and brings about 50 percent increase in retained strength even after the glass becomes flawed.

According to the note shared with the media, Corning plans to introduce two new products at CES 2013: Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a new glass composition with durability enhancements; and Optical Cables by Corning, fiber-based, device-to-device connectivity solutions that significantly extend the data transmission range past the limits of copper-based cables.

Contrary to general perception, Gorilla Glass was never meant to save the phone against full-fledged drops. All it did was to prevent damage in case of nicks or something whacking against the phone’s display. The third edition of the Gorilla Glass will do that better, but if you expect it to save the phone as it tumbles down a flight of stairs, you are basically barking up the wrong tree. What it will do is prevent over-the-time scratches, particularly when the phone and the car keys are in the same pocket. In the meanwhile, check out the video displaying Corning Gorilla Glass 2 strength:
