Nothing is expanding its device ecosystem with the smartphone business

Nothing smartphones will be developed locally in Tamil Nadu, India

Nothing, a Google-based technology company with Carl Pei, former co-founder of OnePlus, at the helm will produce all smartphones that it will sell in India locally. The smartphone will be manufactured in Tamil Nadu.

"We are thrilled to announce that every phone (1) sold in India will be manufactured locally," Nothing India vice president and general manager Manu Sharma told PTI. "Nothing phone (1) is the real start of our journey and we cannot think of a better way to establish ourselves in India, which is a key market for us," he added.

In March, Nothing announced that it will venture into the smartphone business to increase its device ecosystem beyond the audio segment.

The Path Ahead

Nothing has planned to develop its own Operating System (OS) for Phone (1) which will be built using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon mobile platform.

Nothing is looking forward to building a device ecosystem with the introduction of other products like smartphones. They want to rival Apple in their space, with the key factor of letting other products into their ecosystem.

Nothing is planning to sell its Nothing (1) smartphone through the e-commerce platform Flipkart. The company will also expand its customer support in India through 270 authorized service centers in more than 250 cities. The customers will also get year-round support from the Nothing India channels.

Private investors have already invested in the company including Tony Fadell (Principal at Future Shape & inventor of the iPod), Casey Neistat (YouTube personality and co-founder of Beme), Kevin Lin (co-founder of Twitch), and Steve Huffman (co-founder and CEO of Reddit) along with EQT Ventures and C Ventures.

Nothing’s smartphone is set to be unveiled on July 12.
