Asus to offer fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C on the Zenfone 3. The phone could be launched around May or June, 2016.

Asus Zenfone 3 might be almost six months away, but rumours about the phone have already begun. For starters, the Zenfone 3 is expected to feature a fingerprint sensor, and could be launched in May or June, 2016. Latest rumours suggest that Asus is likely to adopt fingerprint sensors developed by Taiwan-based Elan Microelectronics and Chinese Goodix, for the ZenFone 3. Back in March 2015, Asus CEO Jerry Shen had already stated that Asus Zenfone 3 will have a fingerprint sensor.

We also know that the Asus Zenfone 3 will be coming with a USB Type-C port. In a previous report, Shen had stated, “I think Type-C is the way to go, frankly speaking. You will see the answer when you see the ZenFone 3”. He said that USB Type-C was not included in the Zenfone 2 because of cost issues. He said that the company is trying to strike a balance between cost and adoption of new technology. Beyond that, there are no details about the upcoming Asus Zenfone 3.

So far, only high-end phones are offering fingerprint sensor, with exceptions like the Coolpad Note 3. The adoption of the technology has led to a fall in the cost of a fingerprint sensor. According to a report by DigiTimes, the price of of a fingerprint sensor is expected to drop to $5 per IC because of increased demands. Also, the adoption of the fingerprint sensors is expected to rise from 30% to 50% in the future.

Asus is currently selling the Asus Zenfone smartphones in Southeast Asia, India, Brazil, Russia and Taiwan. The company is expected to launch its devices in other markets like Myanmar, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Egypt and Nigeria, in 2016. The DigiTimes report has also stated that Asus may ship about 20 million devices by the end of this year, and aims to ship 30 million by the end of 2016.
