Apple iPhone 17 Ultra may replace iPhone 17 Pro Max this year, here’s why

Apple is reportedly getting ready to shake up its iPhone naming strategy. There are rumours that the company could replace the iPhone 17 Pro Max with a new model called the iPhone 17 Ultra. If that happens, the upcoming iPhone lineup will get a major rebranding to make things clearer and more consistent across Apple’s product range.

The ‘Ultra’ name isn’t entirely new to Apple. The tech giant first used it in 2022 with the M1 Ultra Apple Silicon. Since then, the Ultra label has popped up on high-end products like the Apple Watch Ultra, M2 Ultra chip, and even the CarPlay Ultra.

Apple has usually been careful with iPhone naming, sticking with familiar suffixes like Plus, Pro, and Pro Max. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman predicted back in 2022 that Apple might eventually switch to ‘Ultra’ for its most premium iPhone. That prediction didn’t come true with the iPhone 15, but it may finally happen this year with the iPhone 17.

Why the change now? Apple is expected to release a new iPhone model this year called the iPhone 17 Air. Since Apple usually plays it safe with iPhone naming, this might be the ideal time to revamp the whole lineup and bring the naming style more in line with how they brand their MacBooks and iPads, according to 9To5Mac.

At the moment, there are no solid leaks confirming the iPhone 17 Ultra, but with Apple using ‘Ultra’ more often across its products, it’s starting to feel like only a matter of time before the iPhone gets the same treatment.
