Apple iPhone 17 series coming this September, but 2026 may change how iPhones launch

Every year, Apple follows its usual iPhone launch schedule, releasing the next lineup of iPhones around September. This year seems to be no different, with the iPhone 17 series expected to arrive on time. But if a recent report is anything to go by, big changes could be coming in 2026, including a foldable iPhone and a major reshuffling of the release schedule.

According to a report by The Information, Apple will launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026. To make room for this new model and keep its growing lineup manageable, Apple is planning a shift in how and when certain iPhones are launched. The report says the foldable iPhone will launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and an Air model, while the regular iPhone 18 could be pushed back to spring 2027. The standard model might launch alongside an iPhone 16E follow-up.

With as many as six iPhones in the mix, Apple is said to be working on a more efficient release timeline. The foldable model is expected to have a book-style design, rather than a clamshell design. It will likely feature a 5.7-inch display when closed and an almost 8-inch screen when opened. Supply chain expert Ming-Chi Kuo had earlier suggested that the foldable iPhone would be 4.5–4.8mm thick when unfolded and use Face ID instead of Touch ID.

The report also shares some interesting details about the iPhone 17 Air, a slimmer model expected in 2025. Apple may introduce a new battery case for the phone, as its testing shows that its battery might not last as long as previous iPhones. Furthermore, the report mentions that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max could come with long-rumoured under-display Face ID sensors.
