Is AC and dehumidifier a good combination? When to use them together and the potential downsides
AC and a dehumidifier work well together in humid and damp conditions.
They help reduce moisture, improve comfort, and prevent mold.
Using both together can raise power bills and make the air too dry.
Monsoon season is approaching, and the Indian homeowners are in a state of confusion about whether to use AC or a dehumidifier. Both devices are developed to function in different ways and have different use cases. AC is used to quickly cool an area during the hot summers, while a dehumidifier is usually used to reduce and maintain optimal humidity levels indoors. Many homeowners now run an air conditioner and a dehumidifier at the same time, hoping to feel cooler and drier air indoors. But is this combination actually useful, or just an added expense? Let’s find out under which combination it is a good fit and what the possible drawbacks are of using AC and dehumidifier together.

When to use AC and dehumidifier together

Now let’s see when you can use your AC and dehumidifier at the same time:
- During very high humidity conditions, an air conditioner may not manage to remove sufficient moisture alone. The dehumidifier will speed up the process of removing extra moisture.
- Poorly ventilated rooms such as cellars and closed bedrooms accumulate moisture. In this case, it is good to use an air conditioner along with the dehumidifier.
- Flooding or rains cause moisture accumulation within walls, floors, and carpets for many days after that. The dehumidifier dries up the room, and at the same time the air conditioner will cool the room.
- Where mold growth may be a concern, then using both an air conditioner and a dehumidifier is a good option, as, by doing so, the moisture content will remain low.

Downsides of using AC and dehumidifier together
Some of the disadvantages associated with the usage of the AC and the dehumidifier are:
- When both the devices are run together, then they consume more energy. As a result of that, your electricity bills may increase considerably.
- The dehumidifier produces some heat when in operation. If you have them in a small room, then their performance becomes harder because of the heat produced by the dehumidifier.
- When the two appliances operate for prolonged periods of time, they reduce the level of moisture in the air. You can experience itchy eyes and dry skin, and the room becomes less comfortable for you.
