Buying cheap tempered glass for your smartphone could become a thing from the past, as the government has recently shared a notification confirming that smartphone screen protectors now fall under the mandatory BIS registration framework. Now, the screen protectors that are sold in the country will have to meet a set quality standard from April 1, 2027. Authorities clarified that the new rule will bring the unorganised screen protector market under the check, and buyers can also be assured that the products have been tested against a defined Indian Standard. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) shared a gazette notification on Tuesday confirming that smartphone screen protectors will now come under the mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registration framework.
However, this does not mean that all screen protectors currently available in India will be immediately banned. Instead, the government has given manufacturers and importers a transition period until March 31, 2027, to comply with the standards set by the BIS.
And starting April 1 all manufacturers and importers who are selling screen protectors in India will have to ensure that their product meets the BIS standard IS 19348:2025. Do note that this could have an impact on the prices of the screen protectors.

Screen protector guidelines: What’s new
The smartphone screen protectors will have to comply with BIS Standard IS 19348:2025, which specifies requirements for the product’s thickness and dimensions, glass quality and strength, as well as other components used in its construction.
Not only that but the standard also covers additional features that may be included in screen protectors. These include adhesive layers, anti-shatter films, oleophobic coatings, anti-glare films, blue-light filtering and privacy films.
Packaging requirements have also been clearly specified under the new guidelines. According to the new rules, the products will need to carry important information such as the manufacturer’s details, batch number and thickness.
What does the new BIS rule mean for buyers?
Once the rules come into effect, the consumers can be more confident that they are buying compliant goods that have been tested against a specific Indian Standard. The untested screen protectors in the market are currently posing a health risk, and with the new regulations, they will be dealt with while increasing the level of product quality in the market.
