OpenAI to kill ChatGPT Classic for Mac in 2027: What’s changing and everything users need to know
ChatGPT Classic for Mac will be discontinued in January 2027.
OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT, Work, and Codex into one desktop experience.
ChatGPT and Codex will get a shared usage limit for select plans starting December.
OpenAI is all set to retire its ChatGPT Classic app for Mac on January 30, 2027. Other than that, the company is also preparing to make significant changes to its ChatGPT desktop experience. The company is also encouraging the users to switch to its newer desktop app, which brings ChatGPT, Work, and Codex together under one interface. Users will also get access to a hybrid Chat and Work experience designed to handle everything from everyday questions to complex tasks. The company will also introduce a shared usage limit for ChatGPT and Codex users on select subscription plans. Here’s everything users need to know about these upcoming changes.
SurveyChatGPT Classic app will retire
OpenAI will be discontinuing its ChatGPT Classic app for Mac, formerly known as the ChatGPT desktop app. As per the reports, the users using the ChatGPT Classic app are shown a retirement notice, stating that the app will officially retire on January 30, 2027.
Moreover, the notice tells users to download the latest ChatGPT desktop app that integrates ChatGPT, Work, and Codex in one interface. Additionally, it also promises users that all of their chat history will go with them and they will be able to continue their ongoing conversations.
Nevertheless, the latest app received criticism due to its design and the transition from a native macOS app to an Electron app. However, OpenAI has since made some changes, such as better Chat and Work toggles and a sidebar to switch between ChatGPT and Codex.
OpenAI plans to combine ChatGPT and Work

According to the reports, OpenAI is also gearing up to test a hybrid Chat and Work experience in the upcoming weeks, and the first release will include a limited number of users. With the new app, the users will not only be able to ask questions and explore different concepts but also perform more complicated tasks without having to move between different sections of the app.
In addition, users will be able to use their files and plugins and have ChatGPT build websites and make presentations for them on the web. However, it should be noted that Codex will still be a separate experience in the ChatGPT app.
ChatGPT and Codex to get a shared usage allowance
OpenAI also plans to combine the separate ChatGPT and Codex usage limits into one shared limit starting in December for Plus, Pro, and Business users. The company says most users should not need to wait for their usage limits to reset more often than they do now.
How much of the shared limit you use will depend on the model and task. More advanced models and complex tasks will use more of your allowance. OpenAI has also confirmed that Unlimited Instant will remain part of the plans and will not use up the shared allowance.
